E-books in the Classroom
E-books in the classroom. Just think about it. I think district dollars would be better spent if schools forgo textbooks and invest in computers or smart phones and then purchase the apps for these devices. This way, digital textbooks are frequently updated and customized. Obviously it takes money to purchase and install this technology, but at some point, our society needs to step up to the plate and realize that technology is not a luxury but a necessity to advancing our children in an ever changing world.
I like this idea...students already use their phones and ipods for everything. Why not use it for school too? I think that this may definitely become a focus point for education in the future.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you, and I'm fighting this a bit in my school right now. I've backed down as I realized it was me against everyone, but I'll be bringing this up again every year.
ReplyDeleteThe way I want to use them is just to allow the students to use them. A few of my students have iPads, and a few more have Kindles/nooks. It would be great if we purchased these things and had all our textbooks on there. All I want to do is let them use what they have to read books. The response has been that we have a "no electronic devices" rule, and this is a clear violation. And then I hear they're reading magazines on them during class, or hopping on facebook.
I'm really not sure what we're afraid of here. There's a chance to make school not only a bit more cost-efficient (pricing out iPads or netbooks with an upgradeable OS that will last, hopefully, for 10 years vs. new textbooks every 5-10 years leans heavily in favor of the electronics), but we can make school perhaps enjoyable and cutting-edge again. I really hate that school, the place where people to learn, is behind the learning curve on this. It doesn't make sense.
I could not agree more. And I hate the money defense. Yes, it may be a large initial investment, but you will save in the long run, not to mention the increase in student enrollment because a school is moving in this direction.
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously gearing myself up to write a proposal to our district for this, but I am really afraid of the response I could get. We'll see...
